Caring For Your Dentures

Cleaning and Caring for Your Dentures

Caring for your dentures / partials is a pretty straightforward process. The most important protocol to follow is to always find the time to remove your dentures and allow your tissues to breathe. As an example, if you wear your sneakers long term without removing them, think of how your skin looks and feels after you remove them. Based on that example, your feet would always be wet. This is exactly what happens in your mouth everyday when there is no break for your tissue. Another valuable aspect of removing your dentures at night is to avoid infections.

When you remove your dentures / partials, always place them in a denture bath with water to avoid warping. At Schmitt Prosthodontics, we provide our patients with a denture bath receptacle with each denture / partial delivery. If your dentures dry out or are placed in hot water, warping will most likely happen. We recommend using tap water. To freshen your dentures / partials, you can use an Efferdent tablet or a specialized denture solution.

Like anything else, dentures and partials can break. While cleaning them, we suggest filling the sink with water, or placing a towel below you. In the event they are dropped, there is something to cushion the fall. In addition, there is a barrier over the sink drain. Cleaning them with a mild liquid hand soap and a soft toothbrush to remove food and debris is usually best. Toothpastes are abrasive and can scratch the surface of your dentures / partials, therefore, we do not recommend them. As an added cleaning step, while you have that soft toothbrush handy, it's a good idea to brush your tongue and gums to keep them healthy as well.

Your dentures and partials are a valuable investment of your time and resources. These simple tips will provide your dentures or partials with the maintenance they deserve.
